The Evergreen STEMPower4Girls chapter held their very first workshop “All About Cells.” They covered the types of cells, the difference between plant and animal cells, the different organelles of a cell. As a hands-on way of remembering the different organelles, the girls colored in their own cells on a coloring sheet. Afterwards, they learned about cell division and growth and ended it with a fun Kahoot game!

This was the first workshop we held, and the kids had a lot of fun learning about chemistry. We taught the kids about acids, bases, the PH scale and related this to a fun experiment. We also talked about the acid in our own stomach and the important role it plays in digesting food. At the end we played a fun game of kahoot where all the kids took a fun review/quiz to test everything they learned in this workshop.

The Irvine STEMPower4Girls chapter held a workshop on ecosystems. They talked about oceans, rainforests, and deserts in 9 different parts of the world. The girls were split into different breakout rooms to discuss some questions and they later presented their answers to the entire group. To summarize the workshop, they played a fun Kahoot! game.

SAT

Our second workshop was about ecosystems. We taught the students about three different ecosystems (ocean, rainforest and desert) in 9 different parts of the world. We split the students into breakout rooms to discuss the answers to questions we would pose to them, have them come up with a group answer, and present that answer to the rest of their fellow peers. At the end we did a kahoot which was a fun way to test to see what the kids learned.

For this workshop with the Delhi Government School, we covered the basics of chemistry. After defining atoms and discussing protons, neutrons, and electrons, we talked about the periodic table. We ended the workshop with\ a brief introduction to ionic and covalent bonds. For a fun review, we played a Kahoot!

FRI
16

In the first part of the two-part Counting and Probability workshops, we introduced them to the definition of probability with the classic coin and dice, and then the methods for using AND and OR in counting problems. We ended with an explanation of complementary counting and a fun Kahoot to review the material.

SAT
17

We talked all about animals during this workshop with the Teach For India Girls. We talked about the different types of vertebrates and different qualities of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds. We compared these different types of animals to find similarities and differences.

FRI
30

In the first workshop of the two-workshop CS series with the Muni School, we talked about different algorithms. We started with recursion, then discussed stacks and queues. These data structures were talked about both in the real world and how it could be applied to coding.

SAT
31

After explaining the concept of sinking and floating and talking about how density determines this, we did a live experiment on sinking and floating. The teachers and the students got a bucket of water and their favorite household items. After making predictions, the different objects were tested. The girls enjoyed being able to do the hands-on activity.

SAT
31

Continuing from the first Counting and Probability workshop, we talked about combinations and permutations. To do this, we introduced the concept of factorial. The girls did a lot of practice problems and did a Kahoot at the end to do a final review of this workshop and the last one.

For our third workshop we had guest speaker Kristen Ewert come and talk to the kids. Ewert is an ocean engineer and in her presentation she talked about what she normally does as an ocean engineer during a typical work day. After her presentation, the kids made their own “invention” in groups of 3-4 and they presented it to the class. The goal of the project was to make something that would help the ocean environment. Both groups did an amazing job in planning, designing and executing their projects!

Our second workshop with the Delhi Government School was a continuation of the first workshop we held with them. We discussed the difference between weight and mass and went over the relationship between gravity, weight, and mass. We used an interactive Gizmo simulation to help demonstrate this better, and ended our workshop with a Kahoot!

SAT

In our first workshop of our 3-part Geometric Shapes workshop series, we defined what a polygon is and the girls practiced drawing polygons with different numbers of sides. Then, we covered the properties of polygons and how to name them. Finally, we introduced them to the topic of concavity and explained the difference between a concave and convex polygon.

SAT
28

In the second workshop of the 3-part Geometric Shapes workshop series, we reviewed the material from the first part by doing several example problems and taking through the main points. Then, we introduced the concept of perimeter and why it is important. The girls started off my finding the perimeter of simple polygons they learned about the previous workshops and then applied it to more complex figures.

SAT
